FAQs: Everything You Need to Know About THP

What is your mission?

The mission of The Heroes Project is to show our nation’s injured veterans that the impossible is indeed possible. By pushing them to their limits and helping them overcome challenges, THP aims to provide these veterans with a renewed sense of purpose, achievement, and belonging that may have diminished after their service. We take our military heroes on therapeutic, challenging, and transformative experiences through nature-based activities.

What is your vision?

Our vision is to build the first-ever Veteran Retreat Center in the state of California. The VRC will offer war veterans the chance to connect with others who have faced similar experiences and challenges, creating a supportive community. Our goal is to empower wounded veterans to achieve their personal goals and lead healthy, fulfilling lives by providing a safe and welcoming environment. We will offer a safe and structured environment where our nation's veterans can engage in a variety of nature-based activities, including rock-climbing, hiking, mountaineering, map and compass navigation courses, and much more.

Are you a 501(c)# Nonprofit Organization?

Yes, The Heroes Project has been an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization since 2009. Our tax ID number is 27-1288926

Do you help severely wounded service members from all branches of the military?

Absolutely! The Heroes Project proudly supports all severely wounded service members, regardless of their branch of the military. Any man or woman who has suffered a traumatic physical or mental injury after 9/11/2001 is eligible to participate. The commitment to helping veterans from all backgrounds is at the heart of what THP stands for.

How do you select veterans for your Expedition Program?

Veterans are selected for the Expedition Program based on their commitment and readiness to dedicate 3-6 months to the journey, depending on the chosen mountain and the path to get there. Participants are expected to commit to weekly training, with a plan for at least four days of training per week. The selection process also considers physical abilities and mental readiness to ensure each veteran is prepared for their ultimate adventure. Team THP is a fraternity of kick-ass individuals, and we encourage veterans to join with wholehearted dedication and enthusiasm!

What percentage of my donation goes to the organization?

Every dollar you donate—100% of it—goes directly towards building the Veteran Retreat Center, a sanctuary that will serve as a lasting home for veterans for years to come. Plus, donations are tax deductible, so your generosity not only makes a meaningful impact but also offers financial benefits for you.

Who are your corporate sponsors, and what kind of support do you get from them?

The Heroes Project is proud to partner with our founding corporate sponsors like Equinox Fitness Clubs, Eddie Bauer, and Chrome Hearts amongst other corporations spanning over the past 15-years. These organizations play a vital role in supporting the "Expedition for Heroes" program by providing essential gear, training facilities, and resources that help veterans achieve their goals of scaling the world’s highest peaks. While financial contributions are always appreciated, having access to the right equipment, gear, and training environments is crucial for the success of this transformative initiative.

Do you have any fundraisers?

Yes! Since 2013, The Heroes Project has organized Climb for Heroes, a unique fundraiser hosted on the picturesque training grounds of Mt. Baldy, California.(just a short 45 minute drive from Downtown Los Angeles) Held annually during Veterans Day weekend, this event is designed to be a non-competitive, making it ideal for participants of all fitness levels and ages. It's a family-friendly day hike where children, friendly dogs, and their well-behaved adults can join the fun. Participants can hike with family, friends, and coworkers for a team-building experience or even attend solo to connect with other like-minded individuals. This sweat-inducing, veteran-supporting, and deeply patriotic event unites both the veteran and non-veteran communities. It's an extraordinary opportunity to make a meaningful difference while contributing to an incredible cause

What impact is THP making in our injured veteran community?

We empower veterans to regain their confidence and uncover a renewed sense of purpose. Through our Expedition Program, we support physical recovery while tackling psychological challenges like PTSD, fostering both resilience and emotional well-being. By harnessing the transformative power of the mountains and the great outdoors, we equip our veterans with the tools they need to overcome PTSD, addiction, homelessness and severe injuries, creating a path toward healing and growth.

Why do you only deal with veterans Post-9/11?

We prioritize Post-9/11 veterans because this generation has encountered distinctive and significant challenges. Like the Soldiers/Marines before them, many have faced multiple deployments and endured combat zones, all while still being relatively young. This allows The Heroes Project's outdoor programs to make a greater impact during these formative years. Concentrating on this younger group often involves tackling a higher incidence of physical injuries and emotional challenges such as PTSD, as well as issues like substance addiction and homelessness. By concentrating our efforts to these younger servicemen and women, we can offer tailored support to help them heal, rebuild their lives, and achieve long-term goals, ensuring a brighter future ahead.
