America's Forests: The Role of the USFS & ANF

Wednesday, March 26, 2025

Since The Heroes Project is based in Southern California, we want to spotlight the Angeles National Forest (ANF)—a remarkable natural treasure. It is especially significant as it will soon become home to the first-ever Veteran Retreat Center.

The Angeles National Forest is located in Southern California, just north of Los Angeles. It covers more than 655,000 acres of rugged terrain, including mountains, forests, and deserts. The USFS manages countless opportunities for outdoor recreation, from hiking trails to campgrounds, fostering a deep connection between people and nature. At THP, we believe in the power of nature. The benefits between our nation's veterans and nature are something you can't get from a pharmacy.

The USFS educational programs promote awareness about the importance of forests, encouraging individuals to become advocates for conservation. With this in mind, THP will offer to continue its mission to bring awareness and advocacy for nature. We will offer programs such as mountaineering, rock climbing, canyoneering, and map & compass courses for both veterans and the public. These courses will showcase the benefits of connecting with nature while also emphasizing the importance of forests and encouraging efforts to preserve our beautiful landscapes.

The ANF is home to a wide variety of ecosystems, ranging from chaparral and oak woodlands to coniferous forests and alpine environments. This diversity supports an array of wildlife, including deer, coyotes, big horn sheep, bears, mountain lions, and almost 300 bird species.

The elevation in the Angeles National Forest ranges from around 1,200 feet to over 10,000 feet at the summit of Mount San Antonio (also known as Mt. Baldy), which is the highest point in the range. It also offers numerous recreational activities, including hiking, camping, mountain biking, and horseback riding. There are over 600 miles of trails available for exploration.

One of the most popular hikes in the forest is the Mt. Baldy Trail, which challenges hikers with steep sections and rewards them with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding area. For that reason, since 2009, Mt.Baldy has been the main training ground for our Expedition for Heroes Program. With its diverse terrain and elevation, we were able to train our injured veterans for the seven summits of the world right here in Mt.Baldy. Its rugged terrain demands focus, adaptability, and perseverance, which can bolster mental toughness. Overcoming these challenges builds confidence and mental resilience. Mt. Baldy's combination of steep inclines, varying elevation, and breathtaking beauty makes it an ideal location for challenging and rewarding training experiences. It’s a place where both the body and mind can truly grow.

While the Angeles National Forest boasts untamed natural beauty, it’s impressively close to civilization, making it a favorite getaway for city dwellers wanting a taste of the wild without the hassle of a long journey. Our new Veteran Retreat Center is just a quick 45-minute drive from Downtown Los Angeles. Hard to believe, right? One moment, you’re battling traffic, and the next, you’re blissfully off the grid—no distractions, no city lights, no stress. It's like hitting the 'mute' button on urban life, all within arm’s reach!

These fascinating facts showcase the unique qualities of the Angeles National Forest, cementing its place as a treasured natural resource in Southern California and an ideal location for THP to establish a Veteran Retreat Center. This center will provide our nation's veterans with therapeutic experiences in nature that have the power to transform lives.

THP is honored to partner with the United States Forest Service to further our mutual commitment to offering resources and opportunities that promote economic, ecological, and social well-being while showcasing the transformative healing power of nature.

The United States Forest Service is more than a government agency—it is a beacon of hope for the environment and a symbol of our collective responsibility to protect the earth. By supporting its mission, we help sustain the forests that provide clean air, water, and countless other benefits to humanity and the planet.

Together, we are shaping a future where outdoor enthusiasts can experience nature at its absolute best. THP remains dedicated to providing our nation's veterans with opportunities to embrace and thrive in the natural world—reconnecting with their inner Soldier/Marine while soaking in the healing powers of the great outdoors!
