Investing Time and Money to Support Our Injured Military: The Importance of Nature-Based Activities

Monday, Jan 20, 2025

“How do you truly rehabilitate that guy and get him back to being that Marine/Soldier he once was? The power of the mountains and the great outdoors is the greatest rehab nature can give us,” said our Founder and President of The Heroes Project, Tim Medvetz. The sacrifices made by our military personnel are immeasurable, and when they return home injured—both physically and emotionally—their struggles often continue. Investing time and resources to support these veterans is not just a moral obligation; it's essential for their healing and reintegration into society. Research has shown that nature-based activities, such as hiking, camping, and rock climbing, can significantly benefit injured veterans in multiple ways, which is why Tim started The Heroes Project. He knew that the healing powers of the mountains you cannot get at your local Pharmacy.

The Healing Power of Nature

At THP, we have personally witnessed the healing power of nature. Here was a guy giving battered soldiers something crazy to train for and then something risky to overcome—building a kind of boot camp, and then taking men back into the battlefield except nobody is shooting at you this time. “I’m trying to show these guys you can get your life back by getting outdoors again on these mountains, it's that simple,” Medvetz said in a 60 Minutes interview. Nature has a unique ability to heal. Immersing oneself in the great outdoors allows individuals to disconnect from the stressors of everyday life and reconnect with themselves. For injured veterans, these activities can foster an environment of calm and tranquility, promoting mental and emotional well-being. Studies have indicated that spending time in nature can reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and PTSD, which are prevalent among veterans.

Building Skills and Confidence

When we took USMC CPL Brad Ivanchan to Aconcagua, he emphasized, "I don't know where I'd be if I didn't have a goal to achieve. It was like gaining that confidence back after my injury.”

Engaging in outdoor activities provides veterans with the opportunity to learn new skills and build confidence. Whether it's mastering a rock climbing technique, setting up a campsite, or navigating a hiking trail, these experiences can empower veterans and help them regain a sense of control over their lives. The challenges presented by nature also encourage problem-solving and resilience, crucial traits that can translate into everyday life.

Nurturing Positive Emotions

Nature-based activities are not just about physical exertion; they also nurture positive emotions. Experiences like camping under the stars or sharing stories around a campfire can foster joy, relaxation, and a sense of accomplishment. These moments of happiness are vital for veterans who may often feel overwhelmed by their injuries or the challenges of civilian life. “It’s changed my perception of life and has let me see there’s really no limit to what anyone can do,” said USMC CPL. Kionte Storey after his expedition to Antarctica.

The Power of Camaraderie

One of the most significant benefits of outdoor activities is the opportunity for camaraderie. Veterans often experience feelings of isolation after returning from service, especially if they have suffered injuries. Creating a space where they can connect, share stories, and support one another is crucial for their healing process. The veteran retreat center is an exemplary model of this approach. By offering accessible and understanding support, it fosters a sense of community that can help alleviate feelings of loneliness and provide a network of encouragement.

A Community for Healing

The importance of a supportive community cannot be overstated. Veterans are more likely to heal when they feel understood and connected to others who have shared similar experiences. A retreat center that emphasizes nature-based activities creates an environment where veterans can bond over shared challenges and triumphs, reinforcing their sense of belonging. This community aspect is crucial in helping veterans transition back into civilian life, as it builds a support system that extends beyond the retreat experience.

Investing time and money to support our injured military personnel is imperative for their recovery and well-being. Nature-based activities like hiking, camping, and rock climbing offer invaluable benefits, from skill-building and emotional healing to fostering camaraderie among veterans. By supporting initiatives like the Veteran Retreat Center, we can play an active role in creating a nurturing environment that empowers our wounded heroes. Let us come together to honor their sacrifices and provide them with the resources they need to heal and thrive.
